Baak 54 Apartments: A Unique Blend of Living and Care Facilities
An Unconventional Plot
Arons & Gelauff architecten undertook the challenge of combining apartments with a care home on a challenging triangular plot in IJburg. The site, part of the Haveneiland area, presented a unique opportunity for development. The urban plan called for compact blocks at the island’s center, transitioning to more open spaces along the water’s edge. A portion of the plot was designated for Marius Meijboom, a living-and-care home for individuals with complex disabilities.
Innovative Design Approach
Initially seeking an architect with experience in care home design, the client eventually selected Arons & Gelauff architecten for their innovative vision. The project was conceived as a stepped massing, with three blocks gradually increasing in height. The care home occupies the lowest step, while a residential tower along the Pampuslaan marks the highest point.
Cohesive Ensemble
The three buildings form a cohesive ensemble characterized by a palette of speckled yellow brick intersected by horizontal concrete bands. These bands, imprinted with bamboo patterns, add depth and character to the facades. Expressive balconies, protruding from the buildings, enhance the visual appeal. Champagne-colored window frames and V-shaped balconies further enliven the façade of the residential tower.
Architectural Highlights
The care home features a terrace with glass balustrades extending from the building envelope, supported by multi-colored, tree-shaped columns. This architectural element serves as a welcoming landmark for residents. Additionally, the ground floor is designed to be transparent, facilitating integration with the neighborhood, while strategically positioned windows provide shading on sunny days.
In conclusion, Baak 54 Apartments by Arons & Gelauff architecten exemplifies innovative design solutions that blend residential and care facilities seamlessly. With its expressive architecture, cohesive ensemble, and thoughtful integration into the neighborhood, the project sets a new standard for inclusive and community-oriented urban developments.
