Crafting Harmony: The Story of Ember House by MRTN Architects
Unveiling the Vision
Nestled in the suburban expanse of Doncaster, Australia, Ember House stands as a testament to thoughtful design and bespoke functionality. Conceived by MRTN Architects under the guidance of Lead Architect Antony Martin, this project transcends traditional notions of home extension, offering two distinct spaces tailored to the unique needs of its occupants.
Redefining Extension: A Dialogue of Spaces
The clients sought to expand their living quarters with two distinct additions—one dedicated to work and the other to leisure. Rather than conforming to conventional notions of home extension, Ember House aspired to create spaces that seamlessly integrated with the existing landscape, evoking a sense of tranquility and harmony.
Embracing Inspiration: Japanese Influence and Garden Integration
Drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese architecture, particularly tea houses nestled within garden settings, the architects envisioned a design that celebrated the delicate balance between form and function. While paying homage to renowned architect Robin Boyd’s CHI home, Ember House sought to forge its own identity, weaving a narrative of quiet communication between house, studios, and garden.
Materiality and Craftsmanship: Minimalist Palette and Japanese Elements
External materials, comprising cedar and shou sugi ban style burnt ash cladding, echo the project’s commitment to simplicity and elegance. Internally, the non-work studio exudes warmth and serenity through the incorporation of tatami matting and shoji screens, paying homage to traditional Japanese design principles.
Designing for Specificity: Client Collaboration and Spatial Dynamics
A key challenge lay in crafting two highly specific spaces tailored to the individual requirements of the occupants. Through close collaboration with the clients and a deep understanding of their needs, the architects curated spaces that exuded individual character yet harmonized seamlessly within the garden landscape.
A Tale of Connection and Intimacy: Spaces That Speak
Ember House captivates with its ability to foster connections—not only between occupants and space but also between the two studios themselves. Each space exudes its own unique character and scale, inviting occupants to share secrets and create memories amidst the serene backdrop of the garden.
Conclusion: A Haven of Tranquility and Togetherness
In the heart of Doncaster, Ember House stands as a testament to the transformative power of thoughtful design and collaborative vision. With its seamless integration of Japanese-inspired elements, minimalist aesthetics, and bespoke functionality, this architectural marvel transcends the boundaries of conventional home design, offering a sanctuary of tranquility and togetherness for its occupants.
