Crafting Serenity: The Design Philosophy of Calm Hill
Context and Inspiration
Calm Hill, situated at the foot of the Great Wall in Beijing, China, embodies a vision of tranquility and serenity. Designed by IAPA PTY. LTD. and led by architect Paul Bo Peng, the project seeks to convey an ethos of “Giving time back to life” while reflecting the local culture and lifestyle.
Balancing Introvert and Extrovert Architecture
Given the prevalent introvert architectural style in the area, the challenge was to introduce elements of extrovert architecture without compromising the site’s inherent tranquility. The design successfully balances these two forms, creating a space that fosters both introspection and engagement with the surroundings.
Immersive Sensory Experience
The design eschews conventional exhibition modes, opting instead for a multi-sensory experience that immerses visitors in the local culture. Locally sourced materials such as charred timber, mao-bamboo, and schist stone are used to create a richly textured environment that stimulates the senses and evokes a sense of place.
Fragmented Perspectives
The arrangement of window openings in varied proportions serves as a visual metaphor, connecting people and scenes within the space. These fragmented views invite curiosity and contemplation, prompting viewers to craft their narratives and interpretations of the surroundings.
Embracing the Concept of “Half”
The concept of “half” permeates the design, allowing for a harmonious coexistence between architecture and landscape. This concept of moderation and restraint creates a sense of balance and interconnectedness, fostering a dialogue between the built environment and nature.
Inviting Exploration
From a distance, Calm Hill presents an intriguing sight, with its “White House” seemingly floating amidst the rice fields. The diagonal wall, adorned with a series of openings, serves as a gateway, enticing visitors to explore the space and uncover its hidden treasures.
In summary, Calm Hill stands as a testament to the power of architecture to shape experiences and evoke emotions. By embracing the principles of balance, immersion, and curiosity, the project offers a sanctuary for contemplation and connection amidst the bustling cityscape of Beijing.
