Embracing Nature: The Sustainable Design of the House of Wood, Straw, and Cork
Casa Quattro, designed by LCA Architetti (Luca Compri Architects), stands as a testament to sustainable architecture, characterized by its simple yet elegant design.
Context and Concept
Situated in a quaint town near Milan, this sustainable abode is home to a young couple of computer scientists who seek to live and work in harmony with nature. Nestled on the outskirts of the village, the house enjoys serene views of a small acacia woodland, fostering a deep connection to the natural surroundings.
Architectural Layout
The ground floor hosts essential living spaces, including the entrance, kitchen, bedrooms, study areas, bathrooms, laundry room, and a spacious living room. A mezzanine floor accommodates additional amenities such as a gym and extra bedrooms, overlooking the expansive living area below. A central double-height space floods the interior with natural light, blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors.
Harmonizing with Nature
Drawing inspiration from the rustic charm of Lombard countryside farmhouses, the architectural composition exudes simplicity and authenticity. Building materials, including wood, rice straw, and cork, were chosen for their sustainability and eco-friendliness, while stone and oak wood accents add a touch of natural elegance to the interior.
Sustainable Features
The house harnesses passive and active solar energy to power itself, significantly reducing carbon emissions and energy consumption. The use of natural materials ensures that the building remains environmentally friendly and can be easily recycled at the end of its lifecycle.
Aesthetic Considerations
A unique decorative element adorns the external insulation in visible cork, adding visual interest and vitality to the façade. This eccentric detail, juxtaposed with the simplicity of the architecture, highlights the natural beauty of the materials used.
Ethical and Ecological Design
Driven by a commitment to bio-ecological principles, the design prioritizes ethical considerations and embraces a back-to-basics approach. The result is a dwelling that seamlessly integrates with its surroundings, embodying a harmonious blend of sustainability, simplicity, and natural beauty.
The House of Wood, Straw, and Cork exemplifies the possibilities of sustainable architecture, offering a glimpse into a future where eco-conscious design harmonizes with the natural world.
