Design Concept

DKO’s design concept revolves around the idea of creating vertical villages that animate the street, each with its own distinct character and scale. The buildings are carefully designed to mediate between adjacent apartment developments and smaller terraces and houses in the surrounding context, fostering a network of approachable and diverse communities.
Architectural Features
The buildings are highly articulated, visually broken down into volumes that respond sensitively to existing conditions and future urban plans. The façade, primarily composed of pre-cast concrete with highlights of black metal screens and brick elements, adds texture and materiality while softening the visual bulk of the structures.
Diverse Dwelling Typologies
Offering a variety of dwelling typologies in different sizes and layouts, the Lumina Apartments cater to families of all scales, contributing to a highly diverse community. This diversity is key to creating a dynamic and inclusive living environment.
Open Spaces and Community Facilities

Private and communal open spaces are integrated throughout the development, with street landscaping and double-storey communal spaces creating green buffers and engaging entry points for residents. These spaces support various resident activities and foster social interactions, promoting a real sense of community.
Sustainability Features
The apartments incorporate passive design solutions to reduce reliance on mechanical heating and cooling, including deep balconies, screening, and shading devices for sun protection. Cross-ventilation is maximized to enhance indoor air quality, while low-energy lighting, water-saving fittings, and rainwater tanks contribute to overall sustainability.
Conclusion
The Lumina Apartments in Penrith exemplify a holistic approach to residential architecture, combining thoughtful design with sustainability and community-building principles. By prioritizing diversity, open space, and environmental responsibility, DKO Architecture has created a welcoming and sustainable living environment for residents to enjoy for years to come.
