Reimagining Tradition: The Story of Dr. Funk Holiday House

Discovering a Hidden Gem

Nestled amidst sandy paths near the Baltic Sea coast lies a quaint lake, veiled by trees. Standing proudly on its shores is a small thatched house, built in 1958 by its namesake, Dr. Funk. Today, this charming abode serves as a holiday retreat for Dr. Funk’s grandchildren, offering a tranquil escape from the bustle of everyday life.

Renovation and Transformation

After more than six decades of occupation, the house underwent a renovation to optimize its spatial layout within its modest 38-square-meter footprint. The primary objective was to create a versatile living space capable of accommodating numerous guests in various configurations.

Spatial Organization and Functionality

The ground floor bedroom remains a distinct entity, while all service functions are consolidated within a spatial layer along the outer walls. This built-in unit, resembling furniture, seamlessly integrates the cloakroom, storage, WC, and shower. The kitchen, positioned strategically to overlook the lake, transitions seamlessly into a room-wide bench, framing picturesque views.

Fostering Connectivity and Gathering Spaces

At the heart of the house lies a spacious open area, designed as a communal gathering space. A freestanding column, reminiscent of the original floor plan, anchors the room, while an insertion staircase leads to additional sleeping quarters on the upper floor. This central zone fosters interaction and connectivity among guests.

Playful Design Elements

The design palette embraces simplicity and playfulness, with oversized reddish-brown and pink tiles adorning the floors in a chequerboard pattern, challenging conventional perceptions of space. Pinewood panels and neon yellow accents infuse vibrancy into the interiors, creating a whimsical ambiance unique to the cottage.

Expansive Views and Harmonious Hues

Light green hues envelop the walls and ceiling of the common area, enhancing the sense of spaciousness and tranquility. In contrast, the bedroom exudes a sense of intimacy with its dark green tones, accentuated by views of the serene lake, which beckon through the almost black hues.

Conclusion: A Timeless Retreat

The Dr. Funk Holiday House epitomizes the seamless fusion of tradition and modernity, offering a timeless retreat where cherished memories are made. Through thoughtful renovation and imaginative design, Kessler Plescher Architekten has transformed a humble abode into a sanctuary of comfort and joy, ensuring its legacy for generations to come.
