Restoring Heritage: The Senate of Canada Building
A Historic Transformation
The Senate of Canada Building, a historic landmark in Ottawa, has undergone a remarkable transformation under the stewardship of Diamond Schmitt Architects and KWC Architects. Reopened to the public in 2019 after 50 years, this adaptive re-use project marks a significant milestone in Canada’s capital city.
Architectural Heritage
Originally known as the Ottawa Union Station, this Beaux-Arts structure dating back to 1912 boasts a rich cultural and historical significance. Modeled after iconic landmarks such as the Baths of Caracalla and New York City’s Penn Station, it exemplifies monumental classicism in its exterior expression and meticulous axial symmetry in its interior layout.
Contemporary Interventions
While preserving the building’s architectural heritage, the design team introduced contemporary interventions to accommodate the Senate of Canada’s relocation during the restoration of Centre Block on Parliament Hill. These interventions include committee and meeting rooms, offices, and public spaces, seamlessly integrated within the existing framework.
Blending Tradition with Modernity
Embracing a dialogue between tradition and modernity, the project celebrates Canadian identity through innovative design solutions. New volumes and insertions complement and juxtapose the classical language of the original building, symbolizing the Senate’s evolving role in Parliament.
Craftsmanship and Innovation
Collaborating with the Dominion Sculptor of Canada and leveraging digital technologies, the design team meticulously crafted intricate details that pay homage to Canada’s natural and cultural heritage. Hand-carved maple leaf patterns adorn wooden doors, while cast glass panels feature iconic Canadian landscapes.
Sustainability and Legacy
With a commitment to sustainability, the Senate of Canada Building is designed to achieve Green Globes Level 3 certification. Beyond its tenure as the Senate’s temporary home, the building will revert to government conference and office use, ensuring a lasting legacy of architectural excellence and environmental responsibility.
As a beacon of heritage restoration and contemporary design, the Senate of Canada Building stands as a testament to Canada’s rich architectural heritage and its vision for a sustainable future.
