Revitalizing Urban Space: Fonte Nova Square by José Adrião Arquitetos
Historical Context: From Farming Territory to Urban Hub
Situated in Benfica, northwest Lisbon, Fonte Nova Square occupies a site that was once lush farmland until the mid-20th century. The presence of a water stream, Ribeira de Alcântara, provided fertile lands and gave rise to the area’s landmark, Fonte Nova, or New Fountain. However, the construction of the radial city road, 2a Circular, in the 1960s divided the site in half, leading to the destruction of farms and the disruption of local roads and pathways. Subsequently, the area transformed into a parking lot, dominating the landscape for five decades.
Urban Redevelopment: “Uma Cidade em Cada Bairro”
In 2015, Lisbon City Hall initiated an urban development master plan, “Uma Cidade em Cada Bairro,” aimed at enhancing the city’s neighborhood squares. Fonte Nova Square, covering 3.5 hectares, became a focal point for transformation. The project sought to reclaim lost connections, reduce parking space by 50%, and create a vibrant public space conducive to various activities. Accessibility and inclusivity were key considerations, ensuring that the square catered to people of all ages and abilities.
Design Features: Harmonizing Nature and Functionality
The square’s design embraces the existing tipuana-tipu trees, preserving their natural beauty and providing shade for visitors. Concrete pavement, interspersed with leisure “islands,” forms the foundation of the square. These islands host a range of activities, including kiosks, terraces, a fountain, a dog park, and playgrounds, delineated by concrete bench boundaries. The choice of materials, such as the “vidraço” stone and granite, ensures durability and ease of maintenance, while incorporating elements of Lisbon’s public spaces.
Enhancing Accessibility and Safety
Pedestrian circulation was prioritized, with widened sidewalks, reduced car lane widths, and dedicated bike lanes integrated into the square’s layout. LED street lights illuminate the space, creating a sense of safety and facilitating evening use. Construction was phased to minimize disruption, allowing users to gradually acclimate to the renovated space.
Fostering Social Interaction and Community
Fonte Nova Square has emerged as a dynamic hub for social interaction, drawing people of all ages and backgrounds. The “islands” and surrounding benches serve as gathering spots, where individuals gather to socialize, relax, or enjoy leisure activities. The revitalized street light system has enhanced safety, encouraging more evening use and fostering a sense of community among residents.
Through thoughtful urban planning and design, Fonte Nova Square has transformed from a parking lot into a vibrant public space, embodying the spirit of community and inclusivity. It stands as a testament to the power of urban redevelopment in creating shared spaces that enrich the lives of city dwellers.
