Transforming Higher Education in Uganda: The NTC Project
Introduction
In 2021, bkvv architects embarked on a groundbreaking renovation and construction project aimed at revitalizing higher education in Uganda. The National Teachers Colleges (NTC) Uganda project, which recently received the Architizer A+ Awards 2022 in the category of ‘Architecture for Good’, is a testament to the transformative power of architecture in educational settings.
Project Overview
The NTC project encompasses large-scale campus renovation and the construction of new facilities at two education locations near the towns of Kaliro and Mubende in Uganda. With a focus on creating a safer and more conducive learning environment, the project includes student and teacher housing, classroom buildings, energy-efficient kitchens, sports facilities, sustainable energy facilities, waste recycling, and food production.
Collaborative Efforts
Realized through a joint venture collaboration between Oubuntu Consulting, DASUDA, and bkvv architects, the project has been supported by the Ministry of Education and Sports in Uganda and the Belgium Development Agency, with funding from the Belgian Government. This collaborative effort underscores a commitment to improving education and fostering sustainable development in Uganda.
Climate Responsive Design
A key highlight of the NTC project is its recognition as a best practice example of Climate Responsive Design. By focusing on local-bio diversity safeguards, water protection, and the use of locally available materials such as bamboo and earth bricks, the project promotes community participation and environmental sustainability. The incorporation of natural lighting, ventilation, and passive cooling techniques ensures thermal comfort while minimizing energy consumption and maintenance costs.
Completion and Impact
Construction of the NTC project was recently completed, with the buildings handed over during a well-attended inauguration ceremony in December 2021. The Minister of State and Ambassador of Belgium signed the Manifesto for Climate Responsive Design, cementing the project’s status as a reference for institutional developments in Uganda. With its blend of innovative design, sustainable practices, and community engagement, the NTC project stands as a beacon of hope for the future of higher education in Uganda.
